What’s the challenge?
In noisy situations, hearing clearly can sometimes be a real challenge. But before you consider consulting a hearing care professional, why not do a simple, 5-step test in the privacy and comfort of your own home? It willl give you a good idea of how well your ears perform in the battle between speech and background noise.
What’s the test?
The 'speech in noise' test shouldn’t be confused with the 'pure tone analysis' performed by hearing care professionals. This test simulates a party situation, to see how good you are at focusing on speech and filtering out noise. Your reactions will indicate whether you are beginning to experience the clarity loss that so many people encounter as they get older.
How much noise you can take?
During the exercise the levels of background noise go up and down to test how much noise you can personally handle before losing your focus on the speech.
How well did you do?
Your performance is measured on a scale of 0-100%. Of course, the higher your score is, the better you are at understanding speech in noise. A score below 64% would indicate that your ability has deteriorated. And the lower it gets, the more you should consider having your hearing tested
Where’s the benefit?
The sooner you detect a clarity issue, the better your chances are of keeping your hearing in good shape. You don’t think twice about getting your eyes checked - and the same should apply to your ears. Because you depend on both senses to enjoy an active and fulfilling lifestyle.
This test is a hearing screening test and is only to be used as an indication of your hearing. For a more accurate measurement of your hearing abilities, please contact your local Hearing Care Professional.
